I am a retired medievalist living in Chicago. I work primarily at the Newberry Library but range around the city and state looking at medieval manuscripts and early printed books. From 2012 to 2024 I was Curator of Early Books and Manuscripts at Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. From 1999 to 2012 I was Associate Professor of History at Illinois State University. I began my professional career working in the Newberry Library’s Center for Renaissance Studies in 1996. I am the author, with my friend Timothy Graham, of Introduction to Manuscript Studies (Cornell, 2007) and The Voynich Manuscript: A Photofacsimile with Essays (Yale, 2016).

I enjoy presenting my research on the history of medieval manuscripts. If you are interested in having me teach a class or guest lecture, please contact me using email at the address included under Social Media to the right.
